SUMMARY:Leaseholder Information Session - Elders Centre Construction
DESCRIPTION:In 2019 Tsawwassen First Nation embarked upon a Facilities Planning Initiative to design and build major facilities on Tsawwassen lands. Part of this plan includes a new Elders’ Centre designed to support and promote the health and well-being of all TFN Elders and their spouses. Construction of this long-awaited facility is likely to begin by April 2022\, although site preparation and servicing work may begin earlier. The two-story structure will be located at 1871 Tsawwassen Drive and will be approximately 10\,282 sq. ft. in gross area. The design depicts a simple yet functional sloped roof and a bold architectural form mimicking a bird poised to take flight above the water beyond. The main access for the facility will be from Tsawwassen Drive. The existing TFN daycare access will be used at times. The existing linear park (connecting to the boardwalk) will be enhanced as a pedestrian civic plaza area and outdoor gathering place. This project is anticipated to take 1.5 years for completion and occupancy and during this period a construction management and safety plan will be in place. \nElders Centre – Notification Area Map \nLeaseholder residents who are living in the vicinity of the future site of the new Elders’ Centre are invited to attend a virtual Information Meeting via Zoom (see below for link) to learn more about the plans for the new Elders’ Centre and what to expect in your neighbourhood during the construction period. DESCRIPTION:Light refreshments will be provided\, along with surveys\, games\, and fun cultural activities! Please ensure you dress warmly as this event is outdoors.  All COVID protocols will be followed.  \nTFN’s Member and non-Member population is growing\, and a Comprehensive Facilities Plan is crucial to adequately address\, guide\, design and build major facilities on TFN Lands. Since 2019\, the Executive Council has been the driving force to have a comprehensive planning approach to all the much-needed facilities on TFN Lands. \nSite 4 Facilities Planning\nLands staff have formed an inter-departmental working team to work with the Consultant\, Beringia Community Planning Inc. who will be engaging TFN Members to learn what you would like to see on Site 4 (near the Beachfront Member’s park). Site 4 is located in our Foreshore Area of our Southern Neighbourhood Plan\, immediately south and east of Highway 17. Key features of this site include: \n\nOwned by TFN\nAccess to the foreshore\nBacked by an ecological reserve\n\nAs we continue our Facilities Planning work\, we want to pay special attention to Site 4 and how we want to use and respect our language and culture. This planning process will include Elders\, Youth\, and Families to share and engage community members on the values\, stories\, program needs and design preferences that should inform the development of Cultural Facilities on Site 4. \nThis community process will explore: \n\nThe cultural and historical relationship to the site\nCurrent uses and experiences of the site\nImportant values related to the site such as protection\, access to and use of the foreshore\nThe relationship between public and private uses for TFN members\nCommunity needs and vision with regards to cultural uses of the space and place\nCommunity priorities for future cultural programming and activities
