Commemoration of the Late Jim Aldridge on behalf of Tsawwassen First Nation

It is with deep sadness and profound respect that we acknowledge the recent passing of Jim Aldridge, K.C., a tireless advocate for Indigenous rights. Over his lifetime, Jim dedicated himself to the cause of advancing the rights of Indigenous communities, with his most notable contributions centering on the development of modern treaties. Jim mentored junior lawyers and shared his knowledge with those in the legal community who worked with other modern treaty nations. His unparalleled expertise and unwavering commitment left a lasting mark on many Nations, and for that, we are forever grateful.

Jim was more than just a legal advisor; he was a partner, an ally, and a true believer in the vision of self-governance for First Nations. His role in the negotiation and implementation of the Nisga’a Final Agreement was instrumental in shaping the path forward for modern treaty nations across British Columbia. His work not only helped to secure the rights of Indigenous people but also laid the foundation for a future where Indigenous self-determination is fully realized.

Throughout the years, Jim demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the well-being of Indigenous people. He approached his work with an open heart, a sharp mind, and a deep respect for the voices of Indigenous leadership.

Jim Aldridge’s legacy will live on in the lives of those he impacted and the lasting changes he helped bring about for generations to come. As we reflect on his life, we honour his dedication to justice, fairness, and the advancement of Indigenous rights. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of working alongside him.

Rest in peace, Jim. Your legacy will continue to inspire us all.

With deepest respect and gratitude,

Chief Laura Cassidy and the Tsawwassen First Nation Executive Council
