A Message from TFN Health & Social Services on COVID-19 Response

Transcript of Katie Alexander, manager of Health & Social Services

Hello, I’m Katie Alexander, manager of Health and Social Services for Tsawwassen First Nation.

I hope everyone is staying safe, and staying home by “sheltering in place”, during this COVID-19 outbreak.

There has been some positive news in our province recently, with the lowest daily percentage increases of new infections since March 6.

However, it’s important not to let up the fight against Coronavirus.

Along with other health agencies in British Columbia, Canada, and across the world, we’re reiterating the importance of staying home right now and not visiting people.

It’s especially important not to visit Elders or persons with compromised immune systems; for instance, those with cancer, diabetes, or people taking medications which may lower their system’s ability to fight infections.

There are number of ways Health and Social Services are here to help Members during this time.

We don’t want people to leave their homes, so we’ve been coming to you.

We’re doing a TFN Grocery Support Program on Wednesdays for those unable to pick up groceries themselves. Please visit the link for full details.

We’re also helping to bring social assistance cheques to people at home, also on Wednesdays.

Our nurse practitioner Michelle Sam is taking clients via the phone, so call our medical office assistant if you need to book a medical appointment or if you need assistance with prescriptions.

For those seeking counselling services, we have counsellors working remotely to do phone and Facetime sessions. We recognize that this is a challenging time and there’s a lot of anxiety over what’s happening. So please reach out.

You can also reach out to your neighbours over the phone. Reach out to the people you care about but do it virtually. Don’t go visit them.

Please, let us know what you need and how we can help you! We’re here for you!

Thank you for listening to medical and health professionals and observing social distancing, handwashing, and sheltering in place. Your efforts are making a difference!
