Overview of the Policy
TFN has updated its Employment and Training Policy to better support Members in achieving skills training and career development.
The Employment and Training Policy (2025) reflects TFN’s commitment to lifelong learning, employment readiness, and equitable access to training supports. It was enacted by Executive Council in October 2025.
What’s New
-
- Eligibility & Application:
- Streamlined program application processes and clarified eligibility.
- Members cannot receive funding under this policy and other TFN policies for the same expenses.
- Simplified appeal process.
- Expanded eligibility for private institutions and distance education (with conditions).
Client Responsibilities:
- Clients must meet their institution’s minimum passing grade (not a fixed 60%).
- Attendance standards apply; failure to notify withdrawal may affect future funding.
- Added medical and compassionate leave process.
Funding Support:
- Up to $55,000 annually for training and related expenses.
- Books fully covered (removed $3,000 cap).
- Basic materials & supplies capped at $500/year.
- Computer purchase every 3 years for full-time students; loan program for part-time students.
- Up to $500/ academic year for computer repairs.
- Added $750 graduation expense grant.
Living Allowances & Top-Ups:
- Updated rates as of April 2025.
- Part-time top-up increased to $375 (1 course) and $750 (2 courses).
- Deductions only apply if working 90+ hours/month.
- Expanded dependent and Dependent Spouse eligibility.
- Eligibility & Application:
New Program:
- Mentorship and Internship Program – Connect with TFN Government mentors for skills development and career planning.
Available Supports
- Tuition (including extended medical/dental and student fees)
- Books, supplies, and personal computers
- Computer repairs and tech accessories
- Travel and commuter costs
- Parking permits
- Graduation expenses
- Living allowances for full-time students
- Top-ups for part-time students
- Special equipment for students with disabilities
- Employment supports (equipment, clothing, commuting assistance)
How to Apply

- Download and complete the Employment and Training Application Form.
- Submit the form, acceptance letter, and any required documents to the Employment and Training Team at least 30 days before your program start date.
- TFN will process funding and services as soon as reasonably possible.
- Late applications may result in delays or denial of retroactive funding.
