TFN AGRICULTURAL PILOT PROJECT

The Agricultural Plan sets out a vision “Through support for local food production, job creation and stewardship of farmland resources, agriculture creates contributes to the social, cultural  and economic well-being of the TFN community, while fostering a healthy ecosystem upon which present and future generations can depend”. This plan provides a framework as well as a roadmap for TFN to pursue its vision and objectives.

The TFN Agricultural Business Plan completed in 2020 recommends four key initiatives:

  • Training/Education and Capacity building,
  • Edible landscapes on TFN lands,
  • TFN Community Farm, and
  • Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)

Lands staff have secured three grants will assist implementation of the c̓əlisələm (TFN Community Farm) on 28th Avenue (near the old barn and KPU farm school), and are awaiting approval of a fourth grant. Earthwise Society will be assisting staff with the implementation and most of the work will be done this and next year in phases.

It should be noted that there is an opportunity to apply for a grant (Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s Youth Employment and Skills Program) to engage a TFN Youth mentoring at the TFN Community Farm pilot project, which will be explored next fiscal year for $14,000. This program also offers an additional $5,000 of funding to offset the costs of employee relocation or to offset the costs of barriers faced by youth.
