Summary of the Tsawwassen Legislature Meeting – October 29

The Tsawwassen Legislature convened on October 29 to discuss several important governance matters.

The first item on the agenda was a review Resolution R.005-2024, which proposes the repeal and replacement of the Tsawwassen Election Act. Staff began by presenting a report from the Advisory Council on the Resolution, followed by a presentation outlining how the updated Election Act would modernize and streamline electoral processes to better reflect current governance practices.  Legislators discussed the Resolution and the options for community consultation on the proposed changes. The Legislature will vote on the Resolution at the final meeting on November 7th.

Next, Government Services staff presented the draft of an updated 2024 Legislature Rules and Procedures Manual. The proposed updates to the Manual would bring clarity and consistency to the Legislature’s operations and align the written procedures with current practices. Legislators reviewed the manual and discussed its procedural guidelines, before deciding to convene a committee to further review and finalize the draft for approval at the Spring 2025 Session.

Finally, the agenda included an opportunity for Legislators to introduce their resolutions. Two resolutions were put forward by Councillor Bryce Williams:

  • A resolution to create a Youth Council aimed at fostering the next generation of leaders within Tsawwassen First Nation
  • A resolution to increase rates for TFN member caterers, which seeks to recognize and support local caterers by ensuring their services are compensated at a fair and competitive rate when contracted for TFN events.

Both of these resolutions will be discussed and voted on at the final meeting of the Fall Session on Nov 7th.

The meeting reflected the Tsawwassen First Nation’s ongoing commitment to strengthening self-governance and fostering community leadership and economic development.

The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, November 07, and the livestream will be available on our website and social media channels.
