Tsawwassen First Nation Statement on Introduction of Commissioner of Modern Treaty Implementation Legislation

Today marks a significant milestone for all Modern Treaty Nations with the introduction of the Commissioner of Modern Treaty Implementation legislation in Parliament. Tsawwassen First Nation fully supports this crucial step toward ensuring Canada’s accountability in fulfilling its obligations under Modern Treaties.

Executive Councilor Taylor Baker, Tsawwassen First Nation’s official representative at the Land Claims Agreements Coalition (LCAC), said, “This legislation represents years of advocacy by Modern Treaty partners. The Commissioner of Modern Treaty Implementation will be a vital mechanism to uphold the integrity of our agreements and ensure that our rights, as outlined in the Tsawwassen Treaty, are respected and implemented effectively. We look forward to the continued collaboration as this legislation moves forward.”

Tsawwassen First Nation remains committed to working alongside Modern Treaty partners and the Government of Canada to ensure that this legislation is passed, and that it reinforces the ongoing implementation of our Treaty and the advancement of reconciliation across the country.

“As Treaty Nations, we have a responsibility to our people and to our future generations to ensure that any government—regardless of who forms it—upholds our agreements and progresses reconciliation in meaningful ways,” continued Taylor Baker. “The Commissioner of Modern Treaty Implementation will help guarantee that governments are consistently held accountable, not just in words, but in actions.”
