Update on TFN Rental Housing Project Tree Plan

Tsawwassen First Nation staff have proceeded with development work on the new 36-unit rental housing project for Members at 2261 Tsawwassen Drive.

In accordance with recommendations from Executive Council (EC), the development will have a ground-oriented townhouse style plan which will require some clearing of vegetation from the site.

An arborist was commissioned to develop a Tree Assessment Plan. This plan, approved by EC, will ensure that the trees along Tsawwassen Drive, where the eagles perch on most often, will not be cut down. Only the small shrubs behind the trees will be cleared from the site.

Moreover, EC has directed staff to install two raptor poles prior to the clearing of the vegetation. Staff will be working with BC Hydro to install other raptor perches on existing hydro poles along Tsawwassen Drive. The cost of these installations will be incurred solely by BC Hydro.

Lastly, EC has directed staff to include a comprehensive tree replacement program for the lot where the housing development will be built.
