Wildlife Safety on Tsawwassen First Nation Lands: How to Handle Sick, Injured, or Deceased Animals

We care about the safety and well-being of our community and our environment. If you encounter sick, injured, or deceased wildlife on Tsawwassen First Nation lands, please follow these guidelines to report the situation safely:

  1. Do Not Touch or Move the Animal: Handling wildlife, especially birds, can spread diseases like avian flu. Always contact a wildlife professional before taking any action.
  2. Reporting Sick or Injured Wildlife:
    • For non-raptor birds: Contact the Wildlife Rescue Association of BC at 604-526-7275.
    • For injured raptors (hawks, eagles, falcons): Call OWL Rehab at 604-946-3171.
  3. Reporting Deceased Wildlife:
    • For a deceased duck, swan, goose, raptor, or if you find three or more dead birds together: Contact the Interagency Wild Bird Mortality Line at 1-866-431-2473.
    • For deceased wildlife other than birds (e.g., raccoon, rabbit, coyote, deer): Call the Wildlife Health Program at 1-250-751-7246.
    • For injured or deceased marine mammals: Contact BC Marine Mammal Response at 1-800-465-4336.
  4. Cultural Considerations for Birds of Prey: The Natural Resources Department respectfully handles deceased birds of prey (e.g., hawks, herons, eagles) for ceremonial purposes. Contact Liana Williams at 604-802-9586, Rachel Lau at 604-968-8935, or Dionne Baker at 604-690-4176 for assistance.

Let’s keep our community safe by following these important guidelines. Thank you for your cooperation.
